For five days in Palm Springs, Arwa Mahdawi entered an alternate reality where gay women celebrate each other with pool parties, dancing and debauchery. Everywhere you look, lesbians are smiling, drinking, dancing, kissing. There are a few men around — staff working the event and guys who have been dragged along by lesbian friends — but they are hard to spot. The party is named after the Dinah Shore golf tournament, started in by the eponymous entertainer. A sapphic scene sprouted up around the golf tournament, and the Dinah was born. Today, nobody is here for the golf.

Skip navigation! I first heard about the cult lesbian festival Dinah Shore the same way that most lesbians do, from what often feels like our one cultural reference point, the TV show The L Word. A few of the characters hook up with strangers they meet like Sex and The City , The L Word features several sexual encounters per episode , while the rest discover a weekend of inclusivity, fun and sun.
I polled my audience of Instagram followers and asked them what they thought were the gayest places in the world. But how did this happen? This is a city with mostly gated retirement communities and golf courses, surrounded by desert that reaches temperatures of well over degrees in the summer. Those characteristics alone would scare off most queer folks.
