What Was the Purpose of Saloon Doors?
About Us – The Swingin' Door
You see them in every western movie. Every time someone new comes into town they enter the saloon through those iconic swinging saloon doors. But haven't you ever wondered if that's historically accurate, and if they are, where did they come from? The only thing certain about swinging saloon doors is that their history is very uncertain. The door was split down the middle in order to make it easy for people to enter and exit, without being confused whether you push or pull. The spring-loaded two-way hinged doors were perfect for drunk patrons to leave without pushing and breaking the 'pull' door.

The function of a doorway is to allow people to pass through a wall. The function of a door is to seal that aperture, providing visual and sonic privacy, protection from the elements and denying access to people who are not supposed to pass through that wall. Given those truths saloon doors, of the sort seen in every Western movie, make little sense. Yet we know they existed thanks to not just Hollywood, whose depictions can be suspect, but the actual architectural record.
